Into the world of higher education, we prepare our students on a lot of fronts – from the academic to the more mundane aspects like finances, accommodation, and other logistical concerns. We of the Brilliant PU College can be proud of how we have prepared our students for the challenges of advanced study, but that does not mean that we ignore areas where students can benefit from some extra guidance in this regard. One such is in knowing how to approach certain legal documents, and one that has come up more often of late are notarized lease agreements. A student who signs such a document can suddenly find out that they have made a significant commitment. Therefore, it is important to understand the basics of such agreements.
A notarized lease agreement is a legally binding document that outlines the obligations of both a landlord and a tenant. These documents generally have provisions in place that can protect the legal interests of both parties and as such, it is vital to read them carefully. The document usually stipulates a variety of conditions that coincide with the agreement to rent an apartment, house, or other such dwelling but also contains clauses that protect the landlord, and sometimes others, from legal repercussions of the actions of other parties. It may be a good idea to focus on these points when you are reading one of these agreements, especially if you are going to be using the apartment for parties or other events that may attract the attention of authorities.
One example might be an apartment that you are going to rent with a number of other students and you plan to throw a party one night. If the police burst in and people are drinking underage, it might be easier to say that you as the person running the party were unaware of this, than the landlord. This is especially true if there is a provision in the lease agreement that prohibits the landlord from being held responsible for any actions of the tenants. In this case, you as the tenant might still be held responsible, but to a lesser extent than the landlord might have been if he had allowed someone onto his property.
Understanding the obligations of these legal documents is important, and so is understanding the need for them. At the Brilliant PU College our students experience many of the academic rigors of attending university, but we also expect them to gain additional knowledge in many areas. When higher education is an expectation, greater legal literacy is among them. In this, parents can be of great assistance. They can meet with their children and even attend their apartment viewings with them to ensure that they understand the implications of all that they are signing. Like any contract, a lease may be difficult to understand at first and parents may be able to help in this regard.
Higher education can be an exciting time, and being prepared gives a student a head start. There is a lot about moving away from home that may be overwhelming, and it is important to realize that legal concerns can often make things even more so. However, a little knowledge is a good buffer against a lot of these stressful situations. With a little preparation on the parts of both the parents and the students, a great deal of headaches can be avoided.
